"The Darkening" is the second of the five book "Immortals" series written by several different authors. I have only recently finished the first book "The Calling" by Jennifer Ashley and felt that although "The Darkening" is written by RTP, it follows on so smoothly from its predecessor that I assume these authors must either have extremely similar writing styles or are sticking very firmly to a team brief. It will be interesting to see if the next book "The Awakening" by a further contributing author Joy Nash follows in the same vein.

Darius is only partially able to respond to the Calling; a powerful life magic spell which summons the five immortal sons of various goddesses when death magic threatens (see "The Calling"). Trapped in Ravenscroft; the home of the Immortals by his mother Sekhmet, Darius manages to finally answer his summons and return to earth, but at great cost. His life essence is not fully absorbed, which weakens his magic and his immortality and he is accidentally cursed by Sekhmet to forget who he is should he find complete satisfaction in the arms of a woman. Appearing to werewolf Lexi Corvin in New York, he immediately makes a move on her, and when rebuffed finds himself succumbing to the charms of a succubus. Waking the next morning with no memory, Darius tracks down Lexi from a business card he carries, hoping she has some answers like who on earth he is.

What follows is a whirlwind of magic and battles as Darius and Lexi fight to stop the release of hundreds of demons trapped in another dimension whilst trying to deny their growing attraction. "The Darkening" is a great sequel to what is so far a fabulous paranormal series. Our leading lovers are wonderful; Lexi proving herself bitchy, vulnerable, kick-ass queen and deadly wolf in all the right moments and Darius; well he's just perfect. There's a strong supporting cast in the forms of Rocco; a vampire friend (with benefits) of Lexi's who helps her to siphon off her magic when she's in heat, and her best friend Mai, an investigative journalist wood nymph (although her inability to realise her life is in danger does get somewhat annoying).

I now look forward to reading the next book in this series; "The Awakening" by Joy Nash featuring Kalen (Immortal son of Uni aka Juno) and witch Christine Lachlan and the imminent release of "The Gathering"; the story of Hunter (son of Kali) and witch Leda Stowe by Jennifer Ashley. Tain is obviously due for some redemption as his own story is currently in the works; I can only say it will take one hell of a woman to free him from the evil influence of ancient demon Aja/Amadja.
