5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly funny parody of "A connecticut Yankee", 22 April 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Ever since Mark Twain wrote his brilliant comedy "A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court", both novelists and Hollywood have mined the theme of someone from the writer's time sent back to Camelot.

Some of the work which has come out of this has been excellent (I particularly like the song "Busy doing nothing" which originates in the film version of Mark Twain's book). Some have been less good.

Marianne Mancusi's take on Mark Twain's idea is certainly one of the funniest I have read.

The heroine is Katherine (Kat) Jones, an associate fashion journalist, who is a character straight out of "Sex in the city" complete with $400 Manolo Blahnik kitten heels.

While attending a Medeival recreation called "King Arthur's Fayre" Kat manages to annoy a fortune teller, who threatens to put a spell on her. Nobody else takes this very seriously, but a few minutes later while Kat is watching a mock joust, one of the lances breaks, and a wood fragment flies towards Kat and knocks her on the head. She is knocked out, and comes round - in Camelot.

Needless to say there is the usual obligatory serious of jokes based on the fact that at first Kat thinks she is still in the 21st century among people pretending to be medieval knights and ladies. But eventually she realises that she really has gone back fifteen centuries or so.

So now Kat finds herself in a place where there will be no Manolo Blahniks or a decent Caffe Latte for more than a millenium. How to get back home ?

Told in a beautifully witty style, and with a lot of shock twists, this is a wonderfully entertaining novel.

To resolve the surprise ending, Marianne Mancusi has written a sequel, "A Hoboken Hipster in Sherwood Forest."
