Product Description

Product Description

This is a surprising and at times shocking visual journey through the narrow streets and urban wastelands of one of the most densely populated corners of the world. Hong Kong resident and World Press Photo Award-winning photographer Michael Wolf captures the lives and living conditions of his neighbours through the traces they leave on the city's dense architecture and dark back alleys. Supported by thought-provoking texts by art critic Kenneth Baker and designer Douglas Young, this is a humanistic tribute to the ingenuity of city-dwellers.

About the Author

Michael Wolf studied photography at the Folkwangschule, Essen. In 1995 he moved to Hong Kong as a contract photographer for Asia. Douglas Chi Chiu Young is a designer and founder of the lifestyle store G.O.D. Ltd (Goods of Desire), with stores in Hong Kong and Singapore. Kenneth Baker is the art critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you like looking at blank walls with box windows, then this book is for you!, 6 May 2007
By Snowman (London, UK) - See all my reviews
The book is very large in size, giving readers all they can see. Although the photographs are true to Hong Kong's everyday life, of streets and people, I'd say 40% of this big book are double-page spreads of close-ups of flat units from the outside. After three double-pages the reader has got to think, "alright, I get the picture" but they never stop. I'm sure they're trying to convey how densely populated Hong Kong is, and tries to show this through frequent appearance of photos of square windows across the page, but their method of showing has the reader feeling fed-up rather than appreciative.

On the other hand, photographs are of high quality and vivid. You really get a taste of Hong Kong in these few pages.
