4.0 out of 5 stars Cultural traveller in Russia, 10 Mar 2009
By Donal Flynn (Dublin) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anybody with a literary bent who intends to visit the museums of Moscow or St. Petersburg should peruse this book before they travel. It catalogues in an easily accessible way the artists and writers of the Silver Age in Russia, with notes on each artist's creative work. The book is an illustrated history, packed all through with reproductions relating to the themes discussed as well as with photographs people and artisitic events. Repin, Akhmatova, Rachmaninoff, Malevich, Pasternak are all there of course, but accompanied by many other names, their colleagues and contemporaries, which are now little known to the general public. It is a pleasure to open this reference book at any page.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Silver Reign, 2 Jun 2009
A truly stupendous compendium of arguably Russia's finest hour in art, ballet and architecture at the end of the 19c. The story stretches from the 1890s to 1920 and includes a magnificent cast from Diaghilev to Kandinsky and Malevich, from Kuzmin to Vrubel to Stanislavsky, from Larionov to Bakst to Benois and so many more. The influence of the symbolist and futurist movement spread through the world even more so after the 1917 revolution as many emigres fled to Berlin, Paris and New York. The book contains over 600 illustrations and there are a lot of beautiful works here to uncover. This is an indispensable guide for the serious art lover or russophile.
