3.0 out of 5 stars Great designs, shame about the words, 20 Nov 2008
Great book cover, isn't it? This is a nice-looking widescreen-looking book. It draws on Ken Adam's personal collection of colour and b/w sketches, paintings and photographs of his fab set designs for films like NIGHT OF THE DEMON, DR.STRANGELOVE, the BOND series...

It feels to me, though, there are not nearly enough photographs or pages, considering Adam's amazing, historic career as a production designer. Two pages, comprising of two sketches, and hardly any text, for NIGHT OF THE DEMON...and this guy designed the demon, too. The BOND films average six to fourteen pages each. There is nothing definitive about this book, the text is too cursory for that. It's just very pretty, and the sketches have a place in film history.

The other thing that lets the book down is Christopher Frayling. He's the writer responsible for the words. He's got it easy, because there aren't many words and what words there are seem too simple-minded for the type of informed and enthusiastic readership that would want this book. You could read the whole book in fifteen minutes flat - while watching television and ironing your shirts. On the other hand, you could admire Adam's marvelous designs - like the famous volcano headquarters in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE or the war-room in DR.STRANGELOVE - for years to come. Frayling's 'Conclusion' is better than his 'Introduction', but there's hardly any text between the two, and the 'Introduction' could be torn up without losing a single idea worth saving.

Here is Frayling's first sentence, and it told me the level he was pitching the book at was pretty damned banal:

"Countless books have been written about famous film stars, directors, producers, writers and even cinematographers, but surprisingly few have been written about production designers."

Only an idiot would be surprised about that in this culture.

Frayling is a great talker about films on television, and it's always sad to see a cultured man turn himself into a simpleton for the lowest common denominator of readers and contribute to the general dumbing down of culture. Frayling was bestowed with a knighthood not long ago, but he forgot to arise.

Ken Adam is an inspired designer and this is a fine coffee table book - but I expected more: more pages, more pictures, and more words, and I expected a smarter book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ken Adams Designs the movies-James Bond and Beyond, 4 Feb 2009
I bought this for my husband who is very keen on James Bond and Architecture. He loved the book and said it is about the set design during the making of their films. Lots of good photos and explainations. Very good if you are in to design, art, set design or James Bond in general!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coffee table book, 13 Dec 2008
This is a pretty light overview of Ken Adam's work as a production designer. It takes in his beginnings as art director on films such as Hornblower, and sweeps right through to his work on the computer game Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. It also includes illustrations from productions that were never realised, and films on which Adam worked but subsequently left, such as Star Trek.

The quality and range of the reproductions is excellent. Having been faced with numerous slightly different sketches of Adam's work, and having ended that experience by feeling slightly sick of it, I'm glad that the authors have made sensible and sparing selections.

If you want a detailed commentary on Adam's work, go for the Serpentine catalogue from 1999. This is more of an art sample book, and it isn't pretending to be anything else.
