Product Description

Product Description
The wonderful and positive images captured by Robin Laurance on his photographic journey through the heart of Islam - from the desolate open spaces of the mid-Atlas mountains in Morocco to the lush green paddy fields of Southeast Asia - will do much to dispel such ignorance of the realities of the Muslim world, of its extraordinary achievements and of the way of life of its ordinary men and women as they pursue their everyday existence. As a foretaste to the photographs, Dr Robin Ostle provides a valuable background, explaining the historical background and principles of Islam; the tenets of the faith; its place in law, state and society; and its relation to the other two great monotheistic religions - Judaism and Christianity. This timely book shows the Islamic lands and people as they really are: richly colourful, markedly diverse and, above all, powerfully inspiring.

About the Author
Robin Laurance began his career as a photographer with The Guardian, and has subsequently worked on assignments for many other newspapers and magazines. His book The Millennium Generation was published by Thames & Hudson in 1999. Dr Robin Ostle is a fellow in Modern Arabic at St John's College, Oxford, and has published widely on many aspects of the Middle East.

4.0 out of 5 stars Portrait, 22 Oct 2002
By A Customer
The eyes of the boy on the front cover draw me every time I catch sight of him. The 'Portrait' of the title, however includes far more than a face - a huge distance of places, and a range of climates from shimmering heat to shivering cold; landscapes from rugged mountains to sand dunes to cities. There are children and women and families and people at work; there are water buffalo cooling themselves in a river. From beautifully composed views to intimate close-up studies this book is a joy - an education, a good 'coffee table' book, and a wonderful example of fine photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of Islam is a joy, 28 May 2009
By F. Appleby (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This beautiful book of art photography shows the wide cultural variety across the Muslim world. Every photograph is an eye-catcher. The photographs are enhanced by a series of short authoratitive essays on Islam. It is a joy in the face of the ugly portrayal so often afforded by the press.
