Product Description
Synopsis
Heraldry is a living survival of the great medieval world of European chivalry. First introduced as a means of identification in battle and in tournaments, it gradually spread to society as a whole. Today the knights-in-armour and many of the families who bore these coats of arms have disappeared, but the heraldic tradition survives in the royal arms, flags, emblems, road signs, sports badges and corporate logos of the modern world. This work unravels the complex language and grammar of this social code that has been an inspiration for artists as well as an invaluable tool for historians, archaeologists and those interested in tracing their family tree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heraldry in your pocket, 19 Jun 2002

(REAL NAME)
This delightful small book is one of the 'New Horizons' series from Thames and Hudson. In 144 pages Professor Michel Pastoureau provides a delightful introduction to heraldry, with illustrations from mediaeval times to the modern sports field. The first 96 pages are copiously illustrated in colour, providing an intoduction to the history, language and usages of heraldry. The following 48 pages contain a glossary, index, and some short but more detailed articles on various aspects of heraldry, excerpted from other publications. There is a useful bibliography and list of sources of illustrations. This is a delightful small addition to the library of the heraldic enthusiast, leading one to want to discover more about the subject.
