Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The publication of a new title in Herbert Ypma's hugely successful and highly collectable Hip Hotels series has become a much-anticipated, biannual event. And April 2002 is no exception. With its lush green cover--romantically interspersed with photographs of ancient statues--and its treasure-trove content, Hip Hotels: Italy is as covetable as the destinations it advertises.

The major cities are covered here: in the heart of Milan, mecca for designer die-hards, the ultra-modern Spadari Al Duomo lies close to the architectural delight that is the city's main cathedral and major attraction. Contrast this with Venice's 15th-century Palazzo Vendramin, combining "splendid isolation and insulation... with the authenticity and decorative detail of a genuine Venetian palace", or the seductive garden and pared-down interiors of Rome's landmark Hotel de Russie, the place where the capital's cognoscenti love to be seen.

As always, the most interesting places to stay are to be found off the beaten track. Hip Hotels: Italy traverses the Amalfi Coast, the Dolomites, Umbria and down to Naples, Capri and Sardinia. Hotel de la Poste, the focal point of the Alpine resort of Cortina, positioned among the beautiful Dolomite mountains, owes its style and culture as much to the Tyrol as to Italy--and it is less than two hours from Venice. Hotel le Dune, situated in the wildest part of Sardinia, is almost a relic, "the coastal equivalent of a log cabin in the forest". But surely the most sumptuous hotel of all is the Relais la Suvera, a former medieval fort turned Renaissance palace near Siena in Tuscany, complete with its own Papal Suite. Ornate and family-run, it's a chance to experience la dolce vita to the hilt--without bumping into a holidaying Tony Blair. --Catherine Taylor

'There are few people more expert than Herbert Ypma. His HIP HOTELS series has raised the bar for hotels as destinations'

5.0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Perfect Book on Italy., 16 May 2002
By A Customer
Well,Hip Hotels Italy has many undiscovered treasures with sumptuous photography and witty text. Just love it. Contrary to so many travel journalists, you can see that the author has actually visited these properties, selected them and finally knows what he is talking about. Forget the description of the stupid fruit basket or the fluffy towels. At least he gets down to the real thing, which is the hotel, its history and secrets. How did we ever manage to survive without it???

4.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous photos, 15 April 2002
By A Customer
It is a perfect book for daydreaming. The pictures are incredibly beautiful and the descriptions are informative. It also highlights areas of Italy that are perhaps not as well known, such as Sardinia and the Aeolian Islands.
My one complaint is that the book profiles some hotels which are already very well known and are therefore not really "finds".
