Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The word "HIP" emblazoned in big white letters on the sumptuous red cover gives some indication of the cool elegance that lies within the covers of Hip Hotels: France. Combining the slick of City with the variety of Escape, this fabulously well-designed book is a must. The ultimate marriage of travel guide and aspirational coffee-table book, Hip Hotels: France offers the discerning traveller, the design aficionado and the gourmet a bounty of beautiful places in which to stay.

Author Herbert Ypma, founder of the award-winning magazine Interior Architecture and self-confessed Francophile journeyed through the famous cities and forgotten corners of France to put together this inspirational collection of hotels. With his warm, unaffected prose and sumptuous photographs, Ypma manages to conjures the France of our imaginations--the Camargue where "the vast flat expanse where the sky and the sea meet in a composition of bold horizontal stripes", or St Martin on Ile de Re "the kind of town that makes you want to buy a 2CV, learn to play boules and never again drink anything but wine". The hotels themselves reflect the incredible diversity of the French landscape--elegant townhouses, medieval chateaux, farmhouses, alpine chalets and modern architectural splendours such as Le Corbusier's utopian dream, Unite d'habitation--all are wonderfully unique and many are more affordable than you might imagine. Like any good guide book Hip Hotels: France has a clear format which is easy to navigate. The regions of France in which the hotels are located are laid out in alphabetical order and each establishment is accompanied by details of its history, its surroundings and the noteworthy signatures in its guest book. Contact details (address, telephone, fax and room rates in French francs) are also included. Lavish full-page shots of the interior and exterior of the hotels combined with smaller photographs of interesting design features make it abundantly clear what makes the selected hotels so special. If anything is going to tempt you across the channel, this book is it. --Sarah Crawford

Review

'There are few people more expert than Herbert Ypma. His HIP HOTELS series has raised the bar for hotels as destinations'

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive third Edition but with flaws., 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer
The Hip Hotels series is pitched squarely at style aficionados, those who will unashamedly visit places as much for a hotel experience as for tourist landmarks. However, even those who have little interest in the subject matter cannot help but be impressed by the wonderfully lush artistic photography and immaculate lay out that has come to symbolise this series, as stylish as the hotels themselves featured between the covers. These are the ultimate coffee table books. This French orientated Third Edition is no different. It's cover is adorned in dramatic, baroque reds whilst inside Ypma's gloriously stylish photography conveys with some aplomb the diversity of the country and the raison d'être of the various lodgings featured within. The author pitches the content somewhere between that of his City and Escape Editions, with both urban and rural hotels featured amongst the 41 covered here. Some fascinating history and styles ranging from the ostentation of the Villa Gallici in Aix - en Provence, through classic mid century functionality from Le Corbusier in Marseille, to the brutally stark minimalism of La Perouse in Nantes are amongst the highlights, and the text is never less than fascinating reading, even in areas where hotel specifics are quite sparse. There are some flaws however that set this Edition apart from it's effortless predecessors. In this age of the inforoute, it is a surprise that Ypma does not publish hotel websites where available. Choice of hotels for inclusion is always going to be a subjective matter, however it is a surprise that France's second city Lyons and it's clutch of stunning individual hotels is not represented, especially considering the city's considerable cultural and political influence and growing tourism industry. Quite significantly, of the forty one hotels in this new Edition, no fewer than nine have already been featured in earlier Editions. Ypma has reworked the text and used new and equally impressive photographs with each, but the feeling of déjà vu persists. Most disconcerting of all is the section on the grande dame of style palaces, L'Hôtel in Paris. He refers to it's shabby, run down state although it's hard to imagine that someone as immersed in the world hotel scene would be unaware that this institution was completely redesigned, reinvented and reopened to the public 6 months before publication of this book. The hoteliers of this world who create new, stylish places for discerning travellers to stay need to be very much in touch with the notoriously transient hotel scene around them in order to stay ahead of the pack. This methodology should really apply to hotel writers as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown treasures, perfect escapes accross the Channel., 10 April 2001
By A Customer
For a country so widely covered, Ypma comes up with the ultimate bible for the traveller and design aficionado. Whether it is a dream chateau in Perigord or pure Le Corbusier in Marseille or an old converted cinema in Provence, the photography certainly makes you want to jump in the car. And some hotels are also very reasonably priced. Well done Ypma!!!
