Product Description

Product Description
Over 3000 years ago, Nefertari, the favourite queen of Ramesses II, was buried in a tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Queens. The discovery of the tomb by Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1904 began a process of drastic deterioration which remained unchecked until 1988 when emergancy consolidation and restoration began. This guide takes the reader through each chamber, describing the hieroglyphic messages depicted in the wall paintings, and discussing the images within the context of religious beliefs. An insight is offered into the life of Nefertari and the Valley of the Queens, and on the development and symbolism of royal tombs generally and their construction and decoration. The author discusses the discovery and degradation of the tomb, and the crucial role of the getty Conservation Institute in restoring and stabilizing the wall paintings. The dangers and risks to such tombs in the future are also addressed.

I have been to Egypt, the first time was in 1993, and I made my mind up that I'd like to study Egyptology.

I'm now in my third year of studying Egyptology with Exeter University, although it's not one of my study books I still wanted to read it.

I have been to Egypt, the first time was in 1993, and I made my mind up that I'd like to study Egyptology.

I'm now in my third year of studying Egyptology with Exeter University, although it's not one of my study books I still wanted to read it.

This book goes into great detail about Nerfertari's final journey into the afterlife. The author explains the Egyptian texts well, it also shows how the royal tombs where built and describes Nerfertari's life well.

Both coloured and black and white illustrations show the beauty of this tomb as well as showing some of the tools that they used to decorate this lavish resting place.

Decay stared to destroy these fine wall paintings which was due to the air and tourists that entered the tomb, unfortunately it was resealed whilst a huge conservation and monitoring exercise was completed, the books describes what was done and also shows photos as well. It was finally reopened to the public in 1995.

Whether you are studying or just interested in Egyptology or art in Ancient times, it's an excellent book to have in your collection. I found it enjoyable and extremely interesting, it's a book I'll read again and it was well worth the money. :-)
