3.0 out of 5 stars Very good as a quick guide, 28 Oct 2001
I imagine that this book would be very useful for stage costume or fancy dress etc. As a re-enactor I find it lacking in detailed information. The book is great for giving the popular silhouette and the more common versions of line and decoration but it has virtually no notes on either fabric or colour. The monochrome sketches can also sometimes leave you wondering where one garment ends and the next starts and what notes there are can be misleading as I have noticed that technical terms are occasionally misapplied.

To use this book one would need to have a fair idea already about the issues affecting costume study - for instance it is clear to the experienced eye that most of the illustrations are of young and fashionable people but someone who was not aware of that fact might find themselves confused. Basically I am suspicious of books that use modern illustrations instead of reproductions of pictures/statues etc that are contemporary with the period.

That said I find this book very useful myself, as it is an excellent book for exploring the gradual change in style from one period to the next and also for gaining an overview of the clothing style of any specific period after the conquest.

4.0 out of 5 stars outlines contents and value, 15 Dec 1998
By A Customer
The book contains hundreds of line drawings (8 to a page) of costumes, male and female, throughout the long period specified. There are (extremely) brief manuscript annotations to each drawing, noting special features. Apart from this there is almost no text. For quick reference for amateur stage costume construction, the simple line drawings are ideal. A little more information on colours and fabrics would have been useful, but it's still outstanding value for money. If you want a single reference book and don't want to spend a fortune, this is it.

Although this book has no historical context or, in fact, any text at all other than brief annotations on each drawing it is brilliant for give the greneral idea of each period and there fore if you design your own clothes it is a brilliant book.
