5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic of Celtic Literature, 12 Jul 2008
By D. Evans - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
T.G.E Powell's 'The Celts' is a classic book covering the history, culture and society of the Ancient Celts. Widely considered one of the greatest works of Celtic literature, the book has been in continuous print since it was first published in 1958.

Sadly though, the book hasn't been given much of an update since 1983. As a result its been slightly left behind considering all the recent strides made in Iron Age archaeology and Celtic studies.

That said the book is still full of useful gems. The overview of Celtic life is still very relevant, and you can find information here that is hard to find in recent books on the subject. These include looks at Celtic houses, plough fields, grain storages, temples and other fascinating bits of urban archaeology.

There are also a number of brilliant chapters in the book - one fine example is the chapter on the Celtic supernatural - Which gives a brilliant overview of Celtic beliefs, rituals and deities.

The only chapters that are poorer in comparison are the ones on Celtic origins and Celtic survival into the Dark Ages. New scholarship has tended to throw many of the old certainties to the wind, although the author himself can't be blamed for this considering he's been dead for several years, and he can't really update his work.

Despite this small problem, the book should be read by anyone who has a deep interest in the Celts. Although newcomers might find it a bit of a struggle sometimes, those who already have some knowledge of the Celts will find plenty of fascinating information to be had in the book.

Overall it's a well written, nicely illustrated (with hundreds of photographs), scholarly but accessible title on Celtic Archaeology and history. Deeply Recommended!
