4.0 out of 5 stars A study of the Indo-European basis of Celtic Mythology, 29 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This book attempts to give an overview of the 'Celtic' mythological material, as this is found in the in the Irish and Welsh Medieval texts, and at the same time to provide an analysis of themes and motifs recurrent in these texts. Rees and Rees, very much influenced by Dumézil's works, imply that Celtic myths share many common themes and motifs with other Indo-European mythologies. Thus, they cite parallels from India, Rome and Greece but at the same time from China, Madagascar, or Scandinavia. Although this book has been much criticized and some of its assumptions are obviously far-fetched, it remains a valid and useful investigation of the Indo-European elements in 'Celtic' tradition, and at the same time, gives a detailed overview of Celtic mythology.
