Product Description

Product Description

This is a study of the art and architecture created by the various cultures of the ancient Andes. The book examines the goldwork, intricate textiles, vast cities and tall pyramids that constitute one of the oldest artistic traditions in history which, although the Incas are famous as the masters of the largest empire in the Renaissance world, remains relatively little-known. A range of Andean art is covered , revealing the achievements of the Chavin, Paracus, Moche, Chimu and Inca cultures. Illustrating and describing many varied examples of sculpture, textiles and other media, the book discusses how the art provides a wider knowledge of the people that created it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good all round, 13 May 2003
This is a very good book that puts art & cultural practice in a wider context (including as it does for example the influence of climate & landscape) by an author who is clearly very impressed by the various Andean cultures & doesn't write about them as interesting but inferior specimens, as did some other books I have read. She writes with great knowledge, enthusiasm and at times admiration about the various cultures, whilst being very much neutral when describing practices that might strike us as foreign, unpleasant or even bizarre.
This is cultural history as it should be, writing about a culture as made up of and by the PEOPLE, not just the king & the male members of the ruling class. I wish the same author would write another volume of the actual history of the region - I don't think there is one nearly as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wide range of styles and media examined., 17 Dec 2009
This book will offer you illustrations and information on iconic examples such as the now tourist-clogged Machu Picchu in Peru, as well as other equally inventive, yet less known examples of architecture. Also covered here are examples of clay pottery, bead work, basketry and textile weaving, engraved objects such as bone or metal, jewellery, and more practical items that were used in ritual,or everyday life.
Fascinating reading for anyone planning a visit to this part of the world, doing research ,or for enjoyment. The compact format, easily readable and unpretentious style, and many illustrations, make this an excellent book.
