Product Description

Product Description

This groundbreaking new book illuminates the lives of the kings, queens, princes and princesses of ancient Egypt, unravelling family relationships and exploring the parts they played in politics, cultural life and religion. It ranges from the dawn of Egyptian history, when only isolated glimpses are available of the royal family, through the vast progeny of Ramesses II, and ends with the fiendishly complicated - and blood-soaked - interconnections of the Ptolemies and Cleopatras.

About the Author

Aidan Dodson is currently a Teaching Fellow in Archaeology at the University of Bristol. Among his previous books are The Mummy in Ancient Egypt and The Pyramids of Ancient Egypt. Dyan Hilton specializes in creating genealogies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extensive Genealogy of the Pharaoh Families, 19 Feb 2005
By J. N. W. Bos "Joan" (Utrecht, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is the most complete reference of royal genealogy in Ancient Egypt that I have ever come across. I did not expect so much detail about royals who lived thousands of years ago.
Each chapter contains
- a general description,
- an extensive genealogical tree with relationships marked as either certain, highly probable, likely or hypothetical,
- a section with short descriptions of all involved persons,
- many photographs and drawings.

Where "Chronicle of the Pharaohs" by Clayton focuses on the rulers of Ancient Egypt, Dodson and Hilton describe all their known (likely) family members.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manetho Re-Inc. ?, 5 Dec 2008
By Gina Sergent "Be Precise" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews

Nothing much to say about this book except that it fills a great need, especially for persons like myself who have a considerable interest but no real access to research facilities. The book is well laid out with a family tree for each dynasty and a "potted bio." of each person named and links between the dynastys clarified with, where appropriate, "alternate" lines of succession. Most welcome and USEFUL.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent genealogical resource, 8 Sep 2007
By Matthew Turner "loyalroyal" (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you're looking a for a complete, in-depth genealogy of the Pharaohs and their relatives, this is the book for you. The family trees are excellent and clearly presented. The biographies for each person are brief, giving sometimes just the titles and positions held but the main emphasis is on the genealogy. The illustrations are excellent and the book is helped by a brief historical overview of the dynasties and the role of the pharaoh in ancient Egypt.

Recommended for genealogical buffs, those interested in Ancient Egyptian royalty and scholars.
