4.0 out of 5 stars MAUGHAM - AN OLD MAN IN A HURRY, 12 Oct 2009
By ROMAN (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
William Somerset Maugham was one of the greatest and most popular writers of fiction in the twentieth century - and also one of the most haunted. After a lifetime of unparalleled success and riches derived from theatre, novels and especially short stories, titles such as 'Of Human Bondage', 'The Razors Edge' (novels), 'The Circle', 'Our Betters' (plays) and 'The Letter', 'Rain' (short stories)nephew Robin Maugham, also a writer ('The Servant')sketches his uncle's descent into a dementia fuelled extreme old age with heartbreaking honesty. If you are an admirer of Maugham's, you will find little here to nourish your enthusiasm for his writing. For though Robin obviously revered his work, he concentrates on anecdotes derived from his diaries, describing WSM's haunted, sad decline in the years before his death in 1965.Maugham always regarded himself as at the very front rank of the second raters, though secretly, he craved the respect of important critics. Retrospectively, his standing now is higher than for some time and a re-examination of his legacy overdue. This volume, well illustrated and fascinating in its own context, reveals some of the personal anguish behind the public facade, particularly the fact that WSM, despite an unsuccessful marriage, was predominately gay and devoted to two longterm male companions. What is missing here is discussion of the scandalous part memoir 'Looking Back'(1962) through which WSM tried to vanquish his nightmares by demolishing the reputation of his ex wife Syrie Wellcombe.Altogether, fascinating.
