This is the classic work that explains in detail why numerical methods perform well or poorly. It's the best book I've ever read on Numerical Analysis. Great problems too! From Numerical Linear Algebra to PDE's the basic theory is explained beautifully. If you've ever wondered why iterating the corrector in the predictor-corrector method for solving ODE's doesn't do any good this is the book for you. As an inexpensive Dover paperback this is a real bargain!

Among all the texts on numerical analysis (NA) in my library, this is probably my favourite. IMO it is very well written and I often refer to it seeking greater clarity than is offered by other texts - a clarity that is, IMO, the direct result of the books focus on *analysis* of methods.

My only gripe is that it's treatment of rounding errors is, at only four pages, far too skimpy for my liking. On the other hand, that is a failing of many NA texts and anyone who is serious about assessment of rounding errors refers to Wilkinson's well known "Rounding Errors in Algebraic Processes".

Dover, as ever, offers top value for money with this book.
