Product Description

Synopsis
This reprint of the briefer version of a book that was originally serialized by McClure's Magazine from 1902 to 1904 recounts the history of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, the first major industrial monopoly in the US. The story, which became a model for investigative journalists, explores corporate abuses perpetrated by the company. (REAL NAME)
If you want to understand the origins of competition regulation this is the place to start. John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil trust wrote the book on anti-competitive practices. Their actions led directly to the competition laws we have today.

This condensed version of Ida Tarbell's classic account is a lucid and compelling narrative of the evolution of the American oil industry from the first strike at Drake Farm, and the parallel development of the company that would come to dominate it.

Much of her writing will feel surprisingly familiar to contemporary economic observers. Whilst not trained in economics, the author has a good intuitive grasp of economic issues. Possibly the greatest virtue of her writing is its balance. This is no half baked anti-capitalist polemic, but a fair minded and meticulously detailed account of the rise and rise of Standard Oil 1872 - 1904. Key personalities receive thorough coverage, but never threaten to distract from the narrative itself.

Those of an analytical disposition may wish for more data. Whilst extensive reference is made to financial and operation metrics, they are not presented systematically in graphs or tables. This is probably the only respect in which the book feels at all dated to the modern reader.

Although the book deals with the passing of the Sherman Anti-Trust act and the early regulatory actions against the Standard, its timeframe precludes any coverage of the later anti-trust cases, or breakup.
