The multiplicity of illustrations in this book, although not of the highest standard in terms of artistic ability, puts it up with the best of its kind. The subjects covered are wide and diverse: costume, armour, weapons, banners, siege machines (trebuchets, cannons, etc.), shields, shoes...

Reference to authentic sources and dating is as important to the authors as it is to the reader, and this makes a valuable adjunct to other sources for those seeking a clear indication of the correct gear for a particular period.

This is a Czech book, but the data contained is no less useful to other nationalities, as the differences are small. Indeed, there is a keen interest in the Czech Republic in all matters mediaeval.

All in all this would make an excellent base reference book for re-enactors, or others interested in the mediaeval period.

I will start this review with a caveat: if you reenact the XII century or before, don't take into account this book. Most of it starts from the XV century (although there are plates of the 1350s).
But if you are into reenactment or just study of the armours and costumes of the late XIV to XVI century, then this volume is a trove of information. While the drawings are not the best around, each single picture is fully referenced and so you can use all of the information in this volume. All in all, if you are interested in medieval reenactment, or history of costumes, or whatever else tackles with the Middle Ages, then this book should not be missing from your shelves!
