4.0 out of 5 stars Good tips, but don't be misled by the title, 24 Jan 2006
This book contains many useful tips and techniques on hand sewing, construction, making alterations etc. Although it was intended as a guide to accompany Butterick patterns, the techniques can be applied to any dressmaking of the period.
I was, however, a little disapointed to find that it is not in fact "Authentic Victorian" at all, but actually dates from 1905 and is american, so in no way is it a victorian book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not strictly Victorian, but still fascinating, 23 Sep 2003
By Kate Cole (London) - See all my reviews
This is a reprint of a sewing book from the early 20th century, so strictly speaking it's Edwardian rather than Victorian. However, plenty of the techniques are still valid for Victorian clothing and it's a fascinating little book, with some real insights into historical dressmaking. The main benefit of this book over so many others is that the instructions are original – this is how real people constructed their clothes at the time – rather than designed to be used by 'costumers' and therefore all about using modern techniques to create a historical 'look'.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous resource for reproduction makers and costumers, 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I have never seen a book with so much detail about how victorians made clothing...bustles, dust ruffles, how to bone correctly, etc. Its a must have if you sew repros, costumes, doll dresses, etc. Wow!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what i imagined, but still useful
After reading the other reviews, where someone says great "patterns" i was expecting scale drawn patterns of the clothes, with the instructions. This is not the case. Read more
