4.0 out of 5 stars Want to be fast at mental arithmetic - this is for you., 22 Jul 1999
By A Customer
A book for those who really require confidence building and results in speeding up their mental arithmetic. This is however, not a book for part timers. It is advised, even by the author, that there needs to be a considerable amount of work invested in changing old nasty habits of bad schooling and frightening maths teachers. For those who tend to quake in their footsteps at the thought of adding, multiplying, subtracting, percentage and fraction calculation and decimals, this book requires some serious investment.

Presented in a non-mathematical style, free flowing text walks you through the theories and basics. Examples and exercises are followed by more theory and confidence building in the later parts of each section. The prose is very up beat and occasionally suffers from the American "go and get it" approach. Refreshingly, no strange symbols appear without cause or explanation, and there is total abstention from the usual approach of including the occasional calculation that leaves lesser mortals scratching heads and burning books in frustration at how it is done.

It does require a complete re-think of the way we approach numbers, and how we calculate even the most basic functions. Stoddard draws his theory from the Japanese Abacus system (which may explain why they Japanese are so good at maths). Due to the new approach, considerable time, and an open mind is required. Results will come in the first few weeks - real speed within 3-4 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn a trick or two, 15 May 2009
By Mr. K. Akram "Alkemist" (Wembley, London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Its not often at the of 40+ you come across a concept or idea that makes you think wow, or makes you raise your eyebrows.

I have worked through the first few chapters of this book which covers adding multiple large numbers from left to right, using a Japanese 'Soroban' abacus system. The method is fast and easy to learn. There is a little 'unlearning' of traditional methods, but I found that with practice it got easier and easier to do addition from left to right. The system makes sure you never have to add numbers that total over 10!

I am now approaching the fast addition, fast multiplication and fast division chapters.

I am always looking for new methods and approches to teach my children how to do maths in a fun and entertaining way. Anything that takes the drugdery out of traditional maths learning methods has to help.

This method is amazing and it works. Highly recommended.
