Sir Thomas Heath is an acknowledged authority on the whole corpus of ancient Greek astronomy and mathematics; as such all his works are infused with a profound historical and conceptual understanding of the issues discussed. This slim volume (240 pages) contains an excellent 50-page summary of the subject's development, from its mythological roots (Homer, Hesiod et al) to its final crystallized Ptolemaic form. The remaining 190 pages sets out an invaluable catalogue of primary and secondary sources for ancient Greek thought on astronomy, from the Presocratic philosophers to Plutarch. As an introduction to the topic, with the opportunity to read source material, this book is first-rate. For more advanced inquirers who need more information and deeper analyses, I recommend "A History of Astronomy from Thales to Kepler" by J.L.E. Dreyer, and Heath's own "Aristarchus of Samos"
