4.0 out of 5 stars "The Flying Dutchman" - Dover Full Score, 11 Nov 2003
By A Customer
I can still recall, from my childhood, the eagerness with which my father unwrapped a newly-purchased score, a rare enough event in those days due to reasons of cost. In contrast, these fine Dover unabridged republications are relatively cheap and very good value for money. “The Flying Dutchman” was Wagner’s first accomplished opera and, in many people’s opinions, more accessible than his later masterpieces. This reproduction is of the celebrated conductor Felix Weingartner’s edition, dating from 1896, and includes the composer’s revisions of 1846, 1852 and 1860. The paper binding easily facilitates the flat opening of each page, a decided advantage in keeping up with a live or recorded performance. Text and stage directions are in English, German and Italian, with the English version helpfully printed in italics. While some might find the absence of bar identification numbering an inconvenience, otherwise this is a fine easy-to-read working score, fronted with Paul E. Kennedy’s stylised cover design of the Dutchman’s ghost ship.
