The book is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students whose studies include a component on ′Waste Treatment and Disposal′, including degree courses in Environmental, Civil, Chemical and Energy Engineering and Environmental Science. It is also aimed at professionals in the waste treatment and disposal industry. The book covers the main areas of waste treatment and disposal with particular emphasis on the UK, but examples from Europe, North America and the Far East are also used for comparison throughout the text. The main areas of waste treatment covered include: legislative and economic aspects of waste treatment and disposal; characteristics of different types of waste; waste reduction and reuse; recycling of many different types of waste; landfill operation and formation and control of landfill gas and leachate; utilisation of landfill gas for energy recovery; incineration of waste; incinerator operation; the various types of incinerator emissions – their formation and control; and energy recovery. Other types of waste treatment and disposal – Pyrolysis, Gasification, Composting and Anaerobic Digestion and finally the integration of the different waste treatment and disposal options are also covered.
