Product Description

Nikolaus Pevsner, Foreword to Art and Architecture in Italy
Scores have profited from, and been inspired by Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism and its lesson of the importance of consistent modular relations. No other book on the subject of architectural history written by scholars of his generation had such a creative effect on men in practice.

Sir Kenneth Clark, Architectural Review
Professor Wittkower's mind is not only inquiring but immensely well stored and tenacious. His studies of humanist architecture are masterpieces of scholarship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old style architectural history in the grand manner, 28 Jul 2007
Professor Wittkower became a rare bird with this book. It influenced not just his fellow historians of art and architecture, to eventually collect dust on the top of library shelves and find its way into end notes, footnotes and unread theses, but had a profound influence on practitioners of architecture for at least a whole generation of students and maybe more.

Wittkower made the idea of mathematical proportion as a conveyor of meaning approachable and understandable. It was the revival of an old idea within the canon or architecture, but by presenting a few well chosen examples from a golden age in architectural thought, he somehow tapped into the optimistic pulse of the immediate postwar period. Palladio, Alberti and their confreres leapt into life and relevance to architects that had dismissed the past as dead and buried. The book transmits enthusiasm for a subject - now that is something that academics need these days!
