Product Description

Product Description
"It is the first book that I have read that makes STL quickly usable by working programmers" Francis Glassborow, Chair of The Association of C & C++ Users (ACCU) STL for C++ programmers Leen Ammeraal The Standard Template Library (STL) provides many useful and generally applicable programming tools. This book combines reference material and a well–paced tutorial to get you past the basics quickly. Small, complete programs illustrate the key STL features such as containers, algorithms, iterators and function objects. A section is devoted to the new string data type. All STL algorithms are formally presented by their prototypes and then informally described to show how to use them in practice. Concepts are well illustrated with a large number of example programs all of which are available via ftp (for access details please refer to the preface of the book or Wiley′s website). Finally, special examples are given to explain the advanced notions of function objects and function adaptors, including predicates, binders and negators.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the most un-readable books I've ever purchased, 3 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Not readable. Some really important aspects are completely missing. Not even useful as a reference. - I'll be checking out Effective STL (new Scott Meyers book) which can only be better!

1.0 out of 5 stars Showing its age, 28 Mar 2001
This book badly needs a revised edition. The author should remove all references to the Borland C++ compiler and the "Draft" standard. It makes only a passing reference to the string type. It does not explain exception handling at all, resorting to the excuse that it is a book about STL and not C++ but then goes on to explain how to configure the Borland C++ version 5 compiler so that it doesn't run out of memory. As far as explaining the STL, it just about manages this with a brief description of the major classes and algorithms and simple examples of how to use most of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb insight into the power and flexibility of STL, 14 Mar 2000
By jameswi@microsoft.com (London, England) - See all my reviews
If you want to learn about STL and the algorithms, collections, utility classes and types that it gives you, this this book is for you. If you want to complement your ATL or Native COM programming, then this book is a must.

The author explains the features of STL in a clear and easy-to-understand manner, supporting each code fragment with real-world examples. After learning the more common topics, the author goes into detail with the subtleties, giving explanations of _why_ something is done like that, and explaining the performance implications.

I've recently re-written a project of mine to use STL and have seen 200% speed increases in certain pieces of code. I wouldn't have been able to achieve this without reading this book first.

If you are a serious C++ programmer, buy this book.
