Product Description

Product Description

Covers the fundamental properties of partial differential equations (PDEs) and proven techniques useful in analyzing them. Uses a broad approach to illustrate the rich diversity of phenomena such as vibrations of solids, fluid flow, molecular structure, photon and electron interactions, radiation of electromagnetic waves encompassed by this subject as well as the role PDEs play in modern mathematics, especially geometry and analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid introduction to classical theory of PDE, 5 Aug 2007
By Analyst (Berlin, Germany) - See all my reviews
This book treats the classical theory of PDEs. As such, it is one of the best around. The book is very well organised, it treats the most important range of topics, and throughout Strauss hits the right balance between mathematical analysis and physical intuition, without going into too lengthy discussions. It contains a chapter on numerical methods for PDEs, giving a taster on finite difference and finite element methods, as well as a chapter on distribution theory, which gives an appetizer of the modern PDE theory. It is very well suited for classroom use as well as self study. The exercises are very good.

This book makes an excellent preparation for studying the modern theory of PDEs, for instance in books such as Wloka or Renardy/Rogers.
