Product Description

Review
"It is clear from the outset that Bates has alot of experience in teaching web courses and he uses it to great effect in the book as a whole."
(LTSN–ICS Book Review, 18 September 2001)

Product Description
Demonstrating not only how to use commonly available tools to create dynamic webpages, this book also covers server side technologies. The aim is to show by example how to employ technologies to good effect. Features of HTML, DHTML and Javascript which produce exciting and interactive webpages are highlighted and explained.
XML enables data to be handled by many different applications so that information from spreadsheets, reports, databases and CAD applications can be utilized on the Web. Bates shows ways in which the power of XML can be added to a website.
Recognising that the Web is not just an environment for display and presentation, but is also used extensively for gathering information – and in a world on the brink of embracing e–commerce – for conducting transactions, technologies which send information from browser to server form an important ingredient to the book. Perl, CGI and Active Server Pages are covered and exercises and examples provided to help learn how to implement features
Features:
∗ Well selected and up–to–date content for newly emerging course
∗ Multi–tool coverage avoids necessity of recommending a book per application
∗ Practical and hands–on guidance is always backed up by example
∗ Paced for students with some, but not extensive, programming experience
∗ Examples are plentiful, practical and well illustrated
∗ Website provides more examples and links to useful online resources

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb web development tips for users of all levels, 19 Nov 2001
I have read this book in the course of researching my final-year project at University. I was recommended it by my Project Tutor (one Chris Bates, funnily enough!!) and I have found it to be balanced, well-written and very informative. I have tended to use it to give me an overview of an area, then delved into the rather arcane O'Reilly books to get to the nasty technical stuff. Having been lectured by the author, I feel that he has leveraged all his teaching expertise and experience to produce a superb book which I recommend to anyone starting out in web design.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction book into web programming, 6 Jan 2004
I have found some sections in this book a real help and others not so helpful. Html, javascript, perl, cgi are well covered as the author goes into good detail with lots of examples but i was a little disappointed with some of the other areas of the book in particular the php section where he mostly justs shows the difference between php and perl the languages are similar but i think php should have been covered in more detail as it is growing and growing in use. This book will help you to get building websites using html, javascript and provides a solid platform using perl for cgi programming but is not the complete interent programming book and to the authors credit he does acknowledge this. So for some of the more advanced subject areas jsp,asp this book wont be the most useful resource to use.
