5.0 out of 5 stars Classic text for CAT practitioners and psychotherapists, 23 Feb 2008
This isn't for beginners. You do need an understanding of the concepts and practice of Cognitive Analytic Therapy to make the best of it. There are case studies which are helpful in illustrating the practical application of CAT with this patient population. The first 7 chapters are perhaps the best and most useful. It contains the usual appendices of a CAT textbook of the Psychotherapy File and some other forms, but these are better got from the ACAT website; there are also some clinical outcome studies which may be of interest.
It does, sadly, seem to be out of print, and I've seen copies go for anything between 80GBP and 200GBP, but I was fortunate enough to find one in Amazon Marketplace for 2.76GBP! (Thank you to AwesomeBooks btw)

As a trainee counsellor I hoped that this book would give me insight into childhood sexual abuse and CAT; I was very disappointed. Although I am well-educated, I found this book to be very complicated and difficult to follow. I believe that this book was designed, perhaps, for people much more familiar with CAT and perhaps even with a significant theoretical knowledge of childhood abuse. I would certainly not recommend it to either survivors of abuse or people with merely a general interest; it is neither a good introduction to issues surrounding childhood abuse, nor a good introduction to CAT.
