Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In businessThink, Dave Marcum, Steve Smith and Mahan Khalsa argue that businesses will only achieve their true potential when the people that run them learn to "think business." The authors, all corporate veterans now with the FranklinCovey leadership development organisation, propose eight rules that create a framework for cultivating this different thought process. "Most people are just going through the motions of doing (not thinking) business--merely practicing their comfortable old routines" they write. "Others, the really successful ones, are getting killer results through changing their thinking to become more disciplined, rigorous, creative and sound".

Applicable to any position from staffer to senior executive, the principles are: Check Your Ego at the Door (to develop an open, united atmosphere), Create Curiosity (to uncover new options), Move off the Solution (to clarify the issue), Get Evidence (to clarify the problem), Calculate the Impact (to weigh investment against return), Explore the Ripple Effect (to view the big picture), Slow Down for Yellow Lights (to watch for obstacles), and Discover the Cause (to understand underlying truths). Each element is fleshed out in one or more chapters that showcase them in identifiable real-world situations. The combination adds up to a logical, feasible program that virtually everyone can follow. --Howard Rothman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor rehash of a much better original, 4 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Some time ago I read the excellent "Let's Get Real Or Let's Not Play" by Mahan Khalsa. He's listed as one of the authors of "BusinessThink" but after buying it I discovered that Khalsa appears to have had very little to do with this book. In a long list of author acknowledgements he doesn't even feature! The problem with "BusinessThink" is that it's just a rewrite, and a poor one, of "Let's get Real". Whole sections are taken verbatim from "Let's Get Real". But there is no hint in the introduction, or elsewhere, that "BusinessThink" is just a slightly reworked "Let's Get Real". This is shabby cynicism that shouldn't be rewarded. Avoid this book. Get the much better original that Khalsa did write.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, practical advice. Worth the money., 29 May 2002
By Manu "fool_o_matic" (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
What I really like about this book: it's concise and easy to read, lighthearted, and very practical. Too many books these days go on and on giving 'case studies' and citing references, leaving you little practical stuff to try out. This one stands out, and although a lot of it is common sense, it helps to have it spelled out for you and driven home. If you want a simple and effective methodology to get better at making good business decisions, you'll find it here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump Out of the Rut of Conventional Thinking, 25 May 2002
By A Customer
This important work shows you how to jump out of your existing business rut without jumping into a deeper hole. Using thinking techniques remarkably similar to those taught by the newer creative thinking book Why Didn?t I Think of That? - Think the Unthinkable and Achieve Creative Greatness, the authors help you find clarity, purpose, perspective, and, above all, truth, in your business thinking - lessons you can apply to all your thinking at work and home.
