2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad on a superficial level but left me hungry..., 16 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book when I was researching a particular WWII legendary tale and as there were no reviews or details of the book available I decided to take chance. I wasn't completely disappointed with the purchase although the story that I was hoping was present infact was -surprisingly- not. In Operation Tiger 763 American lives were lost in an exercise rehearsing for the D-Day landings that went wrong off the south coast of England. This was completely and virtually 'hermetically' covered up for many years. The book contains all the staples of good adventure deception, covert activity and propaganda. In this book you will find many weird and wonderful stories about real events during WWII. The author tells the tales quite well but I found some of them superficially written and left me unsatisfied. If you want a book that you can pick up and put down at will after 'taking a bite' then it is for you but that is all this book is. If you want detailed and professionally documented factual history then you are better off looking elsewhere. It's like a compilation album. There are bits that you would really like more of and bits that you are satisfied or dissatisfied with. I like detail and this didn't have much.

Incidentally, if you are looking for really well written tales of WWII then I would highly recommend the following two books:

The Bodies On The Beach by James Hayward is a fabulous new account of propaganda and the burning sea myth of 1940. It covers in detail the Petroleum Warfare Department and the truth about the evacuated village of Shingle Street that has been discussed and speculated upon for generations.

A Mile in Their Shoes by Aaron Elson which documents conversations with real veterans of WWII. This volume contains a fascinating account of what really happen in Operation Tiger at Slapton Sands in the UK when the German E-Boats surprised the D-Day rehearsals and hundreds of men perished.
