Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) are critical to all sorts of electronic security mechanisms. PKI: A Wiley Tech Brief explains PKIs at a level that's appropriate for experienced network administrators and security specialists who haven't looked into PKI technologies in a systematic way before. Though their machinations are often semi-concealed as part of operating systems, messaging environment, or database management systems, a working familiarity with the interior operations of PKIs can prove useful to all sorts of information technology experts. Author Tom Austin--an accomplished security consultant to begin with--has done his research, and provides an accurate and readable assessment of the state of the art.

For a treatment of computer security and public-key encryption, this book has surprisingly little mathematical content. Instead, it focuses on the business case for PKI, and explains how various applications use trusted certificates. Key (pun intended) details get ample attention, including trusted and accurate time-stamping mechanisms, alternate certificate authorities, and PKI auditing. The procedure for acquiring certificates and establishing a PKI also is covered. It's the five case studies, though, that will most impress readers who prefer example to tutorial. The case studies show how organisations (including Perot Systems and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) implemented their PKIs.

Topics covered: Public Key Infrastructures--why you might want one, and how to go about setting one up. Detailed explanations of what certificates and certificate authorities can do precede explanations of the efficiencies that PKI can create. Real-life PKI case studies conclude this specialised primer. --David Wall

Fran Rooney, CEO, Baltimore Technologies
PKI is fast becoming the cornerstone of e-security, and this book provides an excellent perspective on PKI for both technology and business people.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacks any technical depth, 30 Oct 2001
By Eamonn McGonigle - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have to be the dissenting voice...I didn't like this book at all... I was looking for something which gave a solid technical overview of PKI and I was very disappointed. Alarm bells went off when I looked at the table of contents and noted that the substantive technical issues are dispensed with in "Section 2 - PKI Technologies" which is a mere 60 pages long (including chapters on largely irrelevent stuff such as NTP).

The rest of the book deals with the "business" issues surrounding PKI. Even here I feel it does badly. Almost half of it is in a "case study" format, but none of the case studies presented give a detailed picture of how PKI was actually deployed.

All in all, not a book for a technical person trying to get a good handle on PKI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of writing, 10 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I'm a doctoral researcher on PKI and I can bet this is the best book, at the moment, on the subject. I have read all the major titles on PKI but this beats them all. The author smartly balances the technical details with operational aspects. In this way he makes his publication satisfying to the techies without being threatening to general users. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction, 19 Feb 2001
By Roald Andresen (Skien Norway) - See all my reviews

Many times our rookies and our sales peoples have asked me to give them a brief intro to PKI. This book is exactly what they have asked for. Thorough enough to give a complete overview. Simple enough for non-techies to fathom.
