Review
"This is an excellently written and organized examination of existing security perceptions and procedures."––System Administration magazine

Product Description
A step–by–step guide to bulding a commercial–grade firewall with open source software

Building Linux and OpenBSD Firewalls

It′s now more important than ever before to protect your data and computers from people trying to hack into your network. Without the proper security, the wrong person can gain access to your system and read critical documents, change data, delete items, and much worse. With this book, you′ll quickly learn how to protect your network from such attacks as you build a Linux or OpenBSD firewall. From determining how much security you′ll need to configuring the firewall and monitoring your system, authors Tom Yates and Wes Sonnenreich clearly guide you through all the necessary steps to improve your security.

They show you how to:
∗ Build Linux and OpenBSD firewalls that meet your security needs
∗ Choose the appropriate hardware for each operating system and put the machine together
∗ Configure a firewall that allows network services such as email, newsgroups, and Internet and intranet access
∗ Monitor and update your system to close any holes in security
∗ Detect intruders and restore your network security

The companion Web site at www.wiley.com/compbooks/sonnenreich features:
∗ Updates for the most recent releases of OpenBSD and Red Hat
∗ Useful scripts and tools
∗ Sample firewall configurations
∗ Additional online resources

5.0 out of 5 stars At last ! Some help for the novice BSD installer, 9 Nov 2000
By M. Crossley (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book as much for its assistance in setting up a functioning OpenBSD setup, as I did for the specific information on firewalling (although this part of the content is also very useful). The book is sufficiently simple to allow an (almost :-) ) complete novice to get OpenBSD up and running on a bare bones system - and the step by step instructions for this alone are worth the money. A mark of the success of this book is that I have already lent it to a couple of colleagues from whom I have had great difficulty getting it back.

[Oh, and by the way, it is easy to get a copy of OpenBSD in the UK - just order it via openbsd.org ]

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Easy To Use, 19 Jun 2000
This book provides a good basic grounding of the whole internet security 'thing' as well as a clear and consice step by step guide to setting up two Open Source firewalls. My only quibble (and this has nothing to do with the book) is trying to find a copy of OpenBSD in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humourous, very useful, comletely self-contained, 26 Aug 2000
By A Customer
The authors have done an excellent job of making a dry subject very readable. The book starts with an superb introduction to networking & the major areas of security risk, and then goes on to lead the reader step by step through building the firewall. The coverage was clear and complete, from loading the OS to tweaking the end result. Definitely the first book you should buy if you are thinking of setting up a firewall on a Linux box.
