Being a parent of an overweight child myself and realising the seriousness of the situation, i have tried numerous techniques in getting my childs weight down with no success. I have tried Doctors, school nurses dietichans etc...but alas to no avail. It seems that if you have an overweight child under the age of eleven there is not much help out there.I stumbled across this book while looking up the Atkins diet (the book is recommended by Doctor Atkins)so i bought it (more from curiosity than anything else!)and i must say i am glad i did....
The book is written by an American doctor called Fred Pescatore, M.D who, being very overweight as a child touches on, & fully understands the heartache, especially from the childs point of view,- and includes in the book his own personal story of growing up as an overweight child and also some of his own patients storys and how they overcome their obesity with the help of his diet plan. So i'm thinking 'OK' the mans promoting his own book of course he's gonna make it sound good'.. But read on...
Actually the man comes up with some very interesting pointers about the food industry that really do make sense!
The book not only covers obesity but a wide range of illnesses and ailments that are very much on the increase in our children,- including Asthma, diebetes,learning disabilities, behavioral promblems etc...and, in my opinion picks up on some very interesting factors not only for overweight children but for children of all shapes and sizes.
The diet is set out in 3 phases depending on the age and the weight of the child which i found very helpful as my second child is the complete opposite of my first in being, very slim.. bursting with energy..AND being a very fussy eater, SO i found this part of the book a bonus as i found it very helpful for BOTH my children who are at completly different ends of the scale!
The book sets out do's and don'ts in which foods to allow your child depending on which phase they started out from, introducing foods in the next "phase" or being completly forbidden,all of which makes sense exept maybe the exclusion of fruit,although this is only in phase 1 of the plan.It includes a whole chapter full of recipes and also a 2 week complete menu which gives you a kick start and helps in setting up your own weekly menus and helps in setting up a healthy diet for your child 'for life' without depriving them of the foods that all children enjoy,you just need to get the balance right which in short is what the book is all about..and in finding the right balance comes the success for a happier, healthier and a new found confidence in your child!

I can only say in my own opinion if you have tried other sources to help your child lose weight AND, like in my own experience did not help,- then try this book..it is well worth reading!!!!
