Amazon.co.uk Review
WAP is the standard that is defining a new generation of mobile Internet access devices. It's not pretty, it's not fast, but it sort of works and that's good enough for every telephone company in the world to announce imminent WAP services and hope their stock takes off.
Wiley have published the official guide to Wireless Application Protocol, using the most recent specifications agreed by the WAP forum, which meets regularly to improve the spec. As WAP has gone from being one standard among many to the dominant standard in a matter of three or four months, leaving Phone.com's HDML choking on its dust, Official Wireless Application Protocol is a hot volume.
Certainly, WAP is constrained by the poor processing power of most mobile phones, their tiny screen displays, their minuscule memories and their incredibly slow response time. The lack of a security standard may yet hinder its adoption. But WAP's capabilities will improve as bandwidth, processing and memory increase. Wiley's volume--which comes with the complete WAP standard on CD-Rom and includes numerous examples, definitions and references-- seems an excellent place to meet the new kid on the block. --Mel Sebastian
