4.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must: highly recommended!, 23 Sep 2003
This book is an example of an excellent introductory text towards operating systems, aiming for the undergraduate academic. Being extremely readable, the text contains a plethora of material across the vast range of subjects operating systems encompass. The authors have managed to make this book more penetrable than other classical texts and will partner magically with the usual Tanenbaum titles.

The authors assume an understanding of basic data structures, the organisation of computer systems, as well as a high-level language, such as C. Although the main language utilised to demonstrate certain principles and algorithms is in fact C, a sprinkling of Java is also incorporated which may be refreshing for a variety of readers.

An interesting part of this book is the inclusion of the synopsis of various operating system designs spread over a few chapters. These include details covering the kernel designs of systems such as Linux, MS Windows 2000 and MS Windows XP. You’ll find it interesting to compare the system designs against one another, raising many questions that will aid the design of your own operating system, amalgamating the ideas read throughout the text.

Overall, an absolute must for the undergraduate, programmer or serious hobbyist of modern operating systems alike. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible of computing books, 5 Sep 2006
An excellent read. This book doesn't go into tons of detail on every aspect of computers with a load of waffle. It gets straight to the point and tells you what you need to know about each of the areas to have a decent base to learn from, then elaborates with real examples. Things like networks, security, process management & threads etc are all discussed and this variation is largely what makes this an interesting read. The fact that the book discusses Solaris, Linux and Windows (amongst others) is also good.

I would certainly reccommend this book to someone at undergraduate level, but many postgrads may be familliar with some of the concepts within. Having said that this is probably the best (certainly most enjoyable) computing textbook I've ever read and NOT one that I'll be selling now I've finished uni.
