Product Description

Product Description
Chemical reaction engineering is concerned with the exploitation of chemical reactions on a commercial scale. It′s goal is the successful design and operation of chemical reactors. This text emphasizes qualitative arguments, simple design methods, graphical procedures, and frequent comparison of capabilities of the major reactor types. Simple ideas are treated first, and are then extended to the more complex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book, 30 Sep 2004
This book basically teach you all about reaction engineering. Clear diagram, and even show you how to solve very complex multiple reaction. If you are doing final year or reaction engineering research, it will be a best book for you. Not so good for introductory level chemical engineering though, as some of the equation can be quite complex to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and fun, 30 May 2003
I already liked the second edition. With the complete facelift, the redrawing of all figures and the rewriting of the text it is a up-to-date book for both learning and reference.
The excersises are fun and range from easy to real-life (almost)unsolvable. Some are also funny and help the reader with a fresh eye on some problems, like the popcorn reactor or Sherlock Holmes mystery.

The author uses mathematics as a tool rather than an art in itself, so anyone with basic mathematical skills should be able to follow the concepts. The author refers to "old" literature, giving an excellent source of references otherwise lost to me.

The first part starts with homogeneous reactions in ideal reactors, covering kinetics. After introducing the basics of reactor design, comparison of designs are given for different kinds of single and multiple reactons.
The second part deals with flow patterns and non-ideal flow covering age distribution and conversion in non-ideal flow reactors. Different models are discussed to account for non-ideal flow. The concepts of earliness of mixing, segregation and residence time distribution are discussed in the last chapter of this part.
The next part deals with solid catalytic systems, and either gas/solid or liquid/solid reactors. Catalyst deactivation is also covered.
The fourth part is dealing with mass-transfer for liquid/liquid and liquid/soldi systems.
A new part dealing with biochemical reactions was added to this edition. Being rather short it gives the basics of enzyme kinetics and deals with fermentation of whole cells. For me it seemed that the author is not too familiar with the topic, nonetheless the part is concise and to the point, but not as exhaustive coverage as for other topics of the book.
