Product Description
Combining the versatility of Java with the interoperability of CORBA, Java IDL (Interface Definition Language) lets you build object–oriented systems that freely interact over the Internet or intranets, regardless of ORB or programming language. Now Programming with Java IDL offers Java developers a quick, easy way to fully master this important new Web development tool.

With this valuable guide, developers learn Java IDL programming by actually building powerful applications using distributed objects. Experts Geoffrey Lewis, Steven Barber, and Ellen Siegel first bring you up to speed on CORBA, Java, and Java IDL basics. They provide you with step–by–step instructions and source code (also available at the companion Web site) to build three full–fledged distributed systems of increasing complexity. Then, combining valuable insider tips with business system programming savvy, they show you how to quickly modify the code to build your own powerful custom applications.

A hands–on guide to harnessing the power of Java and CORBA to create super–versatile business applications, Programming with Java IDL is an indispensable working resource for Java developers.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book fails to communicate concepts clearly, 24 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This book attempts to introduce both Java and Corba within approx. the first hundred pages, but fails to clearly explain many important concepts. The author(s) seem to me to skate past many important issues without explaining them fully. I think it would be hard to get a clear understanding of Corba by reading this book alone, unless you have some prior knowledge. I feel that possibly a book of this length (not hugely long) should aim to take either Java or Corba and attempt a fuller explaination, rather than trying and failing to explain both. I have given this book 2 crowns rather than 1 because I am unable to comment on the example code which is presented, having not tried it out. I have also been reading Orfali & Harkey's 'Client/Server programming with Java and Corba-. I would rather recommend this one - it provides far greater detail and thoroughness of explaination. It seems to explain things more clearly, is packed with info and has 3 times the pages (targeted more directly at Corba) for an equivalent price.

3.0 out of 5 stars fine material, poor readability, 8 Sep 1998
By A Customer
An okay book on Java and CORBA. One plus point is an applet example quite substantial. But too many run-on references within the text so the reader (me here) can hardly garb a relatively complete picture of one thing without runing back and forth into various parts of the book. I all too often have the feelings that before one subject is sufficiently elaborated, the writers digress into another topic and leave the current subject unfinished "until next section"... It's rather frustrating, indeed.
