Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
This exciting tour of emerging Web technologies explains what Java and XML offer for the future of the Internet.

Early chapters discuss the current state of the Internet, including HTTP, followed by a quick tour of Java technologies. The authors look at database standards such as SQL (for relational databases) and the ODMG 2.0 standard (for object databases).

The most hands-on part of this title examines how to implement a Web-based database using three different technologies: JDBC for programming relational databases in Java; the emerging SQLJ standard for creating "embedded" SQL within Java code; and the ODMG Java binding for manipulating object-oriented databases directly in Java. Next, the authors look at providing HTML pages on the fly using CGI and Java Servlets. Further sections introduce additional Java-based technologies, such as RMI, Java ORBs, JavaBeans, and Enterprise JavaBeans.

Later in the book, the authors explore the intricacies of the XML standard for structuring content within Web browsers. They also detail the Java classes that permit developers to program with XML today. The final chapter concentrates once more on the future tense, with a tour of other emerging standards and technologies. --Richard Dragan, Amazon.com

1.0 out of 5 stars Full of padding and with a misleading title., 7 Feb 1999
By A Customer
One of the authors of this book co-authored the immensely succesful client-server survival guide and I came to this book in keen anticipation. I was very dissapointed. For example, there is a lot of stuff which is more than adequately covered in introductory books on Java. My main gripe is that only a small proportion of the book is devoted to Java and XML. This really is not on: the title promises so much more. I don't know how the book came to be delivered in such a form: was it pressure from the marketing people or is there so little known about Java and XML?

Another problem with the book is the excess baggage it carries in terms of API descripitons, there are no need for these: they can be put on a Web site. When will publishers learn that what we want is not thick books but informative ones?

On the plus side the stuff on Java and XML is tolerably done and there is an interesting chapter on Enterprise Java beans.
