5.0 out of 5 stars All medical students should buy this book!, 10 Oct 2002
By A Customer
I am a first year medical student on a problem based course at Liverpool Uni. I was recommended this text from several second-years and above, as most students at Liverpool use this text. It has everything that you need to know for your first year, and has a good foundation for the next four years. Tortora starts off simple before going into more detail to make it easier to understand what you are reading. The diagrams are detailed, with photographs, radiographs and histology included. The textbook has lots of clinical case studies that are integrated with the text which keeps you thinking about how the anatomy and physiology fits in to the rest of the course. A coloured atlas of the human body (lots of bones!) and a CD are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book., 13 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I purchased this for a pre-course reading list and thought that I probably would not understand any of it, but it is great. It assumes no previous knowledge and goes right from the very basics of anatomy through to very complex structures and details. Each chapter is well layed out and relates stuff to medical problems making sections of the book such as cells and cell chemistry a lot more interesting. Each chapter has an end summary and quiz, as well as tests on one of the accompanying CD-Roms. For someone as lazy as me to get through this on my own and understand it, it has to be a great book and I would recommend it to any medical/ nursing/ allied healthcare students.

4.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource!, 14 Feb 2004
I was first advised to purchase Tortora & Grabowski when I first began my Nurse Training. At first, I thought that the lecturer must have been joking if she thought I'd understand anything of anatomy / physiology, but that's where Tortora and Garbowski came to the rescue. The text is a reliable, detailed and dare I say interesting resource. It can be utilised by any level of understanding, be it novice or otherwise. Tortora and Grabowski seem to understand that their readers / students may not have Biology degrees or any previous knowledge, and begin each explanation from the very beginning, progressing through to the finer details. This could be probelmatic though, as for example, I found, finding it difficult to know where I would need to "stop" with a particular section, as ALL levels of understanding are explored. All in all though, without doubt, an invaluable resource.
