Product Description

Product Description
With the ever–increasing number of Spanish–speaking people in the United States, it is essential for those working in the mental–health arena to have a precise understanding of the Spanish language, particularly since the information communicated is of such a technical nature. This important tool contains more than 60,000 entries—30,000+ in each language—providing clear, concise definitions for virtually every word and phrase involved in the study and practice of psychology and psychiatry.

From the Inside Flap
Wiley’s English–Spanish Spanish–English Dictionary of Psychology and Psychiatry Over the past decade, a variety of factors has led to increased commercial, cultural, and intellectual traffic between English– and Spanish–speaking countries, especially in the Americas. This intercourse has produced a growing need for precise communication between users of these two languages, especially when the information communicated is of a highly specialized or technical nature. The realms of psychology and psychiatry are no exception to this trend. Wiley’s English–Spanish Spanish–English Dictionary of Psychology and Psychiatry is the only book of its kind. It provides concise, comprehensive, and current coverage of virtually every word or phrase used in the study and practice of psychology and psychiatry. This unique and useful resource contains more than 60,000 entries—30,000–plus in each language—covering all disciplines and subdisciplines, both research and clinical. Featuring an extremely user–friendly format, this dictionary was designed for quick reference and clarity. It directs you instantly to the precise equivalent you need without first "rerouting" you through a maze of other irrelevant terms and phrases. Gender neutral equivalents are provided, and in cases where the gender–specific term is the norm, both are given. For idiomatic expressions, conceptual equivalents are provided, rather than literal translations. Phrases that begin with the same word or words are provided as separate entries, and the same is true for words that serve more than one grammatical function (e.g., articulate). This indispensable tool encourages and facilitates the sharing of ideas across linguistic, cultural, and international boundaries. For psychologists, psychiatrists, students, translators, and interpreters who need quick easy access to equivalent terms in Spanish and English, there is simply no other source. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Word-list, not dictionary, 24 May 2008
By M. Kennedy Scanlon - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is quite useless as a dictionary. I suspect it was created using a computer to carry out one-to-one word substitutions. A human lexicographer hardly seems to have been involved at all. A few examples of words whose translations vary considerably according to context but which are given one-word translations here are Eng. "approach" (entry: Sp. "acercamiento"), Sp. "ilusión" (entry: Eng. "illusion"), and Sp. "control" (entry: Eng. "control"). Many of these are classic translation errors. No note is made of parts of speech or gender. There is no entry at all for Eng. "report", whether noun or verb. It's astonishing that this book was published.
