1.0 out of 5 stars If listening to and speaking in the kind of meaningless..., 16 Sep 2000
By damon@ar-se.demon.co.uk (Bedford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
...Put bluntly, the book is a discredit to John Wiley and Son - whose books I would never, until now, have hesitated to purchase.

If listening to and speaking in the kind of meaningless business hyperbole is the kind of thing that gets your juices running then this book is for you...A quote wouldn't do justice to staggering ineptitude of the writing style. But to give you some idea, the word "leverage", which is at best business slang is used to excess - it appears on virtually every page. The writing style of the author when talking generally or about business benefits of SQL Server/MTS (complex without need, and out of place in a book of this kind) should be contrasted with the author's instruction on how to get results out of these applications - elementary to the point of naivete.

The context of much of what is written is usually far from clear. For example, on page 55, out of nowhere we get-

"The SharedPropertyGroupManager is used to manage shared property groups". Well, big deal Einstein, I think I could have worked that one out for myself. It would have been useful, at a more appropriate point in the book to tell me what a shared property group is and who, why, where, what is the need is for it to be managed. The explanation (in the same paragraph) that "a SharedProperty object processes shared properties" is just as (un)useful. Unfortunately, the rest of the book is written in the same style and the very occasional essays into lucidity do little make up for the very turgidity of the rest of the text.

In summary, if there is one book that you don't buy this year - this is it.
