From the Author
Writing for New Media - Author's CommentsWriting for New Media is a book for writers, editors, publishers, journalists and anyone else interested in the new rules of grammar and syntax for interactive media. Just as books about screenwriting began to appear in the 1960s, WFNM brings the structure of writing to the interactive era. This book could be a basic text for all writing classes that teach or discuss the new media. This book is not about technology (although it covers the basics). It is about writing, grammar, communication, creativity, and information design in the new era of electronic media. ======================================== WFNM is (or could be) the 90s equivalent of Marshal McLuhans landmark book Understanding Media. WFNM takes McLuhans thesis about "hot" and "cool" media and, for the first time, extends this concept to the interactive media which were not in broad use in McLuhans time. ======================================== The book begins with a historical perspective and shows that the roots of interactivity did not require a computer. From the Talmud and the Rosetta Stone, to future technology, WFNM explores how humans invented and use interactivity. By the end of the book, users will fully understand the very nature of interactivity and how they can apply it to any form of writing for any medium now in existence or to be developed in the future. This book will not become outmoded quickly because it does not pin its ideas and information to a particular technology. While covering writing for, and taking advantage of the Web and CD-ROMs it goes far beyond these media by projecting the basic perceptual and psychological aspects of interactive media beyond the technology itself. ======================================== The practical side of this book is valuable for those seeking careers in this exciting new field. It describes the production process and explains in detail all the job functions on interactive media productions and includes career path information as well. The book provides concrete examples all the way through and shows flow charting techniques and other planning tools the writer can use to create an interactive project. ======================================= Using specific examples, WFNM covers the rules of the road for new media writers and sets up the foundation of a new interactive grammar. It also shows how to think interactively by offering exercises anyone can try to see how we already have interactivity built into our brains. ======================================= Additionally, it shows users how to plan for interactive writing; adapt linear material to interactive media, and write proposals for interactive projects. ======================================= WFNM is an essential course book for high school and college level creative writing courses, grammar courses, journalism courses and similar curricula. ======================================== WFNM could do for interactive media what Marshall McLuhans book Understanding Media did for the linear media. WFNM for the first time begins to structure a grammar and syntax for a new form of communication made possible by the ubiquity of the personal computer and similar devices. WFNM defines iverbs, inouns and other parts of interactive speech which, until recently didnt exist. ======================================== Today, the new media are very fragmented . Like the five blind men and the elephant, everyone has a different notion of what it is. To some, it is an extension of print, to others it is an extension of TV, to yet others it is an arcade game. WFNM sets out what the new media are and what they should be. The underlying thesis is that technology has the power to deliver information in a way that most closely parallels they way humans think. Therefore, people will be able to cover more material quickly, and retain much more of it. For the first time in history, there is a way to provide true demand-based information in real time. To be successful, new media writers must understand how to use this powerful technology or they will ultimately fail to communicate in the new media.
