5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and thorough guide to hands-on VRML, 1 Jul 1998
By A Customer
Although a 600+ page book may appear daunting, the VRML Sourcebook is written so that after the first couple of chapters, you can jump around, reading the chapters you want or need, and skipping others until you need them. It's a great single book reference, as a beginner can use it, but unlike many beginner guides, it's complete and thorough. You won't outgrow it, or find that anything important's been left out.

If, like me, you are new to 3D computer worlds, it may be hard to follow the concepts and language syntax just from reading the book. Once you start working with it, however, the basics become clear, and the book becomes a great reference. Since the entry requirements are so low, there's no reason not to try out the hands-on examples or create your own worlds. A free VRML browser, some of which are included on the CD, a text editor (WordPad or vi will do) and this book is all that's needed to get started writing VRML!

One typo note: page 547, the Collision node starts with "Collision" not "Group".

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for begginers, but a good reference otherwise., 20 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Having already learnt a bit about VRML with online tutorials, I was suprised how much I knew about it. The book didn't go much further than I had already learnt. Having said that, it has become a good reference, and I am sure it is very good for beginners. The book was very well structured and written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Virtual reality worlds? No bother!!, 1 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Well, considering I had to teach myself VRML2.0 for my final year dissertation at university, on the whole I found this book very approachable. It has a good depth of information and I think that it can cater to a wide group of people, both as a learning tool and a reference.

The only criticism I have (and it is a fairly major one) is of the huge amount of typographical errors in the book. Anyone with a bit of sense can work around these, but it is a major annoyance to see so many typos, especially in important syntax material, i.e. check out the AudioClip node syntax (you'll know what I mean if you get the book!) and where is the routing syntax that is supposed to be in Chapter 2?

Even though I have been moaning about the book, I would recommend it to someone else who is intersted in learning how to create virtual worlds (as they look really cool!).
