5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming Concepts, 23 Aug 1998
By A Customer
I was looking for a way to introduce my students to object-oriented programming without scaring them out of the class in the first 10 minutes. Karel the Robot is a powerful aid to teaching because it has a very limited vocabulary, which is easily extensible and encourages students to build their own components quickly. It is a great way to introduce concepts that will be directly analogous in C++ and Java. The examples and problem sets in the book provide a rich resource of ideas. Although some of the concepts can difficult such as recursion, this is a great book for teaching structured logic to students from high school through collage level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great explanations of concepts, 27 Oct 2007
By Guy Edwards (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was dreading working through formal books on OO programming with "obvious" (to the writer) walls of C++/Java code that make you fall asleep. In those type of books they typically explain the technical concepts fully but without any examples that you can apply immediately to real interesting problems. I also hate the "For Dummies" style of books that expect big font sizes and jokes inserted in the text to make learning the topic easier.

This book was a breath of fresh air. The examples problems throughout the book are really easy to understand and the coding solutions explained in plain English. The author stays on topic throughout and explains the concepts with direct reference to the problem being attempted. It's just really accessible to a "normal" human.

I've worked with BTEC/HNC and similar level students and could easily imagine using this material to teach with. It's understandable, it's easy to read, each end of chapter has a set of problems to answer. It's not a dull, thousand page reference book.
