5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Anyone studying Mental Health get this book!, 4 Mar 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this outstanding text. I've had this book before I started my university course studying Mental Health Nursing over 18 months ago.
Although probably aimed at Clinical Psychology students, it is still a valuable or more to me an invaluable tool in researching for assigments.
The book assumes the reader has no previous knowledge of mental illness.
And from the first chapter it takes you on a journey into the wonderful world of caring for those who suffer from mental illness.
It describes the history of mental healthcare in Europe and America from the horrible and terrible conditions and punishments that were inflicted on sufferers and how through reformers and public pressure things have drastically improved.
The book introduces all the major mental illnesses from mood disorders e.g. anxiety and depression.
Disabling conditions e.g. Schizophrenia,Bi-polar disorder to the controversial diagnosis of Personality disorders.
Also it has a section on substance misuse. One of quirky things of the book it occasionally has peppered throughout the book pictures of celebrities mainly Americans who are sufferers. Something about the American psyche? Or brave people who wish to highlight their particular disease? You decide.
The book credits the discoverers of these illnesses and highlights treatments available from medication, psychotherapy and breaking research from the Human Genome project which has identifed certain chromosomes involved in mental illnesses.
The book has some superb research inside the covers, a fantastic reference and bibliography section and also inside the covers a overview of the DSM-IV the bible of Psychiatrists throughout the world.
If that wasn't enough there is also a card inside the front page that allows the reader to get updates through the internet.
Value for money guaranteed. This is essential reading or reference for anyone studying mental health no matter what field of work.
Again our American colleagues lead where we only follow.
