4.0 out of 5 stars Dear Prudence, 9 Jun 2004
It is to the reader's benefit that Mr Keegan writes about what he knows, and as an economic journalist he knows a great deal, however the result is a strangely skewed book which leaves a lingering dissatisfaction.

The books strengths lie in the detailed exposition of the formation of Gordon Brown's policy prefences and the account of the transition to an independent Bank of England, where both the decison and its implentation are covered in depth. The account follows the current journalistic idiom which emphasises the personal dramas in polictical events.

Gordon Brown, we are told, is more interested in microeconomic policies than the macro. Nevertheless, the balance in the book is towards macroeconomic policy with three chapters given over to monetary policy. We look vainly for a similar analysis of the Chancellor's microeconomic initiaves.

This is an interesting account by a close observer, but not yet the definative account of Gordon Brown's contribution to Britain's improved economic standing.
