5.0 out of 5 stars Enhancement.... empowerment?, 30 April 2008
By A reader (London) - See all my reviews
This book explores so many interesting issues that it's hard to know where to begin in summarising them, but one fascinating question is whether enhanced human beings will gain or lose autonomy. The arguments are complex and subtle, and it's well worth reading about them because they are likely to become more and more pertinent in the years to come. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an interest in human enhancement, and everyone else, who should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humans of the future, 9 Jun 2008
By Third Reviewer (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
What will it be like being a human in 20 or 30 years time?
Will failing hearts be routinely replaced?
Will alzheimers be a disease of the past?
Will we have developed new senses on top of our usual five?
Will olympic record keeping be obsolete?
Will we be able to communicate with each other simply by thinking?
To find out more read this well researched, down to earth but fun book. The complicated science is made easy to understand with the help of simple diagrams. We meet both the researchers and those who try out their ideas, all providing lively first hand accounts of their experience. Pete has his views but we can reach our own conclusions too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wideranging and novel primer on enhancement, 10 Jun 2008
By Dr. Trevor G. Stammers (Epsom UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very engaging and easy to read introduction to enhancement technologies with a format based on the author's interviews with people with a wide range of different connnections with enhancement. They range from a man with an mechanical pump to assist his heart to a guy who had a magnet implanted in his fingers and can feel when his laptop transformer is on.

It covers a lot of ground from mind enhancing drugs to Oscar Pistorius' blades, and from medicine to the military.

The most interesting discussion in my view is about the difference between enhanced individuals and enhanced communities - the latter are not necessarily composed of the former. Read it and you'll see why.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read - but unduly sceptical
This is a populist, easy-to-read book, with plenty of pictures, and boxes that re-emphasise selected parts of the text (example: "Just think of the possibilities of a brain... Read more
