Product Description

Review

"Pitfalls and opportunities are explained in straightforward terms that help managers to steer process improvement efforts towards sustained advantage. Schonberger reveals how to refocus lean and Six Sigma processes on what he calls the ′golden goals′: better quality, quicker response, greater flexibility and higher value." (Worksmanagement.co.uk, August 2008)

"This book makes the case that "lean won′t work without quality", and to that end the author focuses on the companies that have achieved "the world′s longest, steepest rates of improvement in leanness" companies like Dell, Wall–Mart. The book poses a curious semantical analysis of the term supply chain management suggesting that the emphasis on the word supply implies that it is the customers′ job to manage and improve relations with their suppliers." (IndustryWeek.com, July 2008)

Product Description

Best Practices in Lean Six Sigma Process Improvement reveals how to refocus lean/six sigma processes on what author Richard Schonberger—world–renowned process improvement pioneer—calls "the Golden Goals": better quality, quicker response, greater flexibility, and higher value. This manual shows you how it can be done, employing success stories of over 100 companies including Apple, Illinois Tool Works, Dell, Inc., and Wal–Mart, all of which have established themselves as the new, global "Kings of Lean," surpassing even Toyota in long–term improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2008 Title pulls together some key conclusions, 25 Mar 2008
This book published in 2008, draws heavily on Richard Schonberger's excellent and growing database of Companies' Lean practices. The book uses the data to draw messages and conclusions on the adoption, and retention of Lean practice. While weighted in this data, the author manages to make a balanced and incisive discussion without overwhelming the reader. I recommend this to any involved in the development or pursuit of Operational and Manufacturing excellence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real good view of how far we've come with Lean, 15 Jul 2008
By Malpaso Man (Pencoed, UK) - See all my reviews
I really like this book, it has been written with the true benefit of hindsight. The data which has been accumulated by Schonberger & Associates over many years allows real performance trends to be plotted - the book is peppered with graphs which compare case companies within the same industry and takes a helicopter view across whole industries. The performance graphs were based on Inventory Turnover, which a few Lean-Six Sigma people may have objections about, but I think that's a really good yardstick measure.
Luckily it is not full of the normal tools and techniques (which Schonberger describes as the Lean core) which can be found in dozens of existing books, I think the author appreciates that readers will already know that material (or possess the texts), rather, he shows us how well (or not so well) the journey to Lean excellence has gone so far.
Points of interest include how the Aerospace & Defence OEMs are performing far better than their suppliers, whilst Automotive suppliers are performing better than their OEMs - including Toyota. Yes, for all those Automotive Lean Manufacturing Consultants who've just choked on their coffee - I did say that - there are companies now doing Lean better than Toyota, this book shows examples of the new kings of Lean (Dell, Wal-Mart etc) - which I personally found very refreshing to read.
A wealth of case studies contained within (although I may have expected to see 7-Eleven Japan, and Zara studied more), and some topics covered which will ring a familiar bell with some operations managers whose Lean projects have lost momentum. The Amazon 'look inside' facility will give you a flavour of what I mean - sections such as "The Metrics Trap" , "The Kaizen Trap: Dis-Continuous Improvement", "Six Sigma(Zero Defects too): Not Good Enough" are particulalry interesting - it also talks about Combating Bureaucratization and focussing on improving the "rate" of improvement.
..... not like the usual Lean books - all in all, money well spent !!
