Fundraising Analytics: Using Data to Guide Strategy is a rich and detailed book. The author helpfully explains what constitutes analytics and how an analyst thinks. There are sections on understanding your donors, major donor fundraising and regular giving. The final section is an easy to use guide to building a model using SPSS.
This book would be most useful in organisations that already have a large database. However, for those building thier database from scratch (like me) there have been gems in the text. It was motivating to read what can be done with a well structured and consistent capture of donor information.
Anyone looking to improve their donor retention rates, recruit new donors or find potential major donors in their database will find this book useful. As the Head of Fundraising at a new and small charity, I gained the following insights from the book:
1) Know your donors and constituents. Send our regular surveys and collect data where possible. This will help serve our donors better and also improve recruitment of donors. The 2008 mystery shopping report by John Grain Associates http://www.johngrainassociates.com/ has reminded me how we have such scope to improve our donor communications and that communications strategies need to be based on data.
2) Ensure data is captured correctly. This is not overly stressed in the book. However, all the analysis relies on robust data.
3) Make decisions based on data and build your own models.
Fundraising Analytics is a book I will return to regularly as there is so much content. The author explain the concepts for those who don't have a degree in statistics and keeps a strong focus of why we use analysis - to better serve our donors.
